Customer Requirement
The company JOSEF MEYER Ltd. (JMR) located at Rheinfelden developed a new container flat waggon for three 20-foot containers. Earlier braking distance measurement exposed that the cars of the type Sgnss CTW 2004 were over-braked. For this reason JMR adjusted the brake system of that car type. The breaking behavior of the waggon after the changes should be evaluated.

Realisation
In November 2005, braking distance measurements with the converted coach were performed at the Bern area. For these tests, the carrying coach of JMR was uncoupled from the PROSE measuring coach. After that, the carrying waggon caused a fast break.

Customer Advantage
The measurement equipment made it possible that after each measurement run the measuring data was available in the measuring coach immediately. On that way, it was possible to calculate the breaking percents after each run. The results could be discussed with the customer.

Customer Requirement
The manufacturer of the locomotives wanted to measure the current wheel profiles of some vehicles of the type Sr2 for further analysis concerning the running dynamical behaviour.

Realisation
PROSE engineers measured the wheel profiles of five locomotives of the type Sr2 at the depot site in Helsinki, using a laser-based measuring system. The measured data was paired with a theoretical railprofile to evaluate the equivalent conicity. With the elaborated measuring system, it was possible to include the inclination of the profiles caused by a bent axle.

Customer Advantage
The high flexibility of PROSE as well as the measurement-method which respects the measuring-angle was a clear advantage for the costumer.

Customer Requirement
The bogies of the articulated railcars GTW of the "Hessische Landesbahn" (HLB) have been revised. To get to know the stresses during normal operation and to compare the results of simulations with the real loads, PROSE carried out load collective measurements on one vehicle of the fleet.

Realisation
The measurements took place in the autumn 2005 on the route network of HLB. In close cooperation between customer and PROSE, the measuring positions were defined in advance. Strain gauges were placed at critical positions. Additionally, several displacements as well as accelerations on the bogies were recorded.

Customer Advantage
After an extensive evaluation of the measured data by PROSE, the customer can calculate the durability of the single components. Furthermore, he can compare the results with FE-Analisis and with past test results.

Customer Requirement
The Finish Sr2 locomotive has been adapted to increase the permissible speed. The manufacturer of the locomotive wanted to know if the modification have any effects on the structural integrity of the bogies.

Realisation
In late autumn 2005, PROSE engineers accomplished load collective measurements on a modified Sr2 locomotive in Finland. The measuring runs took place between Helsinki and Oulu. For that purpose strain gauges were applied to the bogie at critical locations (hot spots). With these sensors it was possible to measure the mechanical stresses.

Customer Advantage
After an extensive evaluation of the measured data by PROSE, the customer can calculate the life times of the single components. So it is possible to evaluate possible influences on the life time caused by the modifications on the bogies.

Customer Requirement
A trailer and motor bogie have been developed for the regional commuter train "PROTOS" (a product of Fahrzeugtechnik Dessau Ltd.). Below the low floor vehicle two fans and filters had to be suspended in the motor bogie for the two forced air-cooled motors.

Realisation
The development of the bogies and the supervision of the structure strength test have been carried out by the Engineering & Consulting division of PROSE.

Customer Advantage
The development of the bogie was performed in very short time in order to complete the first bogies for the prototype train within only eleven months.

Customer Requirement
The Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) purchased 10 FLIRT electric motor units for the rapid-transit railway system in Basel. The lines, on which the trains shall be in service, are both on Swiss and on German territory. Therefore the FLIRT train had to be approved both by the Swiss and the German authorities, BAV and EBA. The objective was to achieve the acceptance of the vehicle according to EN 14363 in Switzerland and Germany.

Realisation
The manufacturer of the FLIRT, Stadler Bussnang Ltd., assigned PROSE Ltd. to execute the running characteristics type test. PROSE Ltd. is an accredited laboratory, certified by the German Railway Authority (Eisenbahnbundesamt). PROSE Ltd. prepared the specification and conducted the test runs in Switzerland and Germany. Finally the results were evaluated in a report, which could be submitted directly to the authorities.On the same FLIRT train, on which the tests for the acceptance of the running characteristics were performed, even load collective measurements were conducted by PROSE Ltd.

Customer Advantage
The complete process to achieve the approval of the vehicle was accompanied and supported by PROSE Ltd. From the preparation of the specification to the acceptance of the running characteristics by the authorities, our customer could rely on our continuous support. The close cooperation with the authorities ensured, that the authorities’ decision about the approval can be made based on our final report. No later adjustments or additional test runs were required, which saves time and money.The calculation of the safety factors of the assessment values enables our customer to extend the approval on other vehicles, which are constructed in a similar way. In this case no additional on-track tests are required for the new vehicles. As the tests for the acceptance of the running characteristics and the load collective measurements were executed parallel on the same FLIRT train, synergy effects could be used. This lead to an efficient and cost-saving realisation of the tests.

Customer Requirement
Because of the speed increase of the vehicles on the new lines, the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB Ltd) requested a comfort overview of their national vehicle fleet. The coaches of the following types were the object of interest: IC2000 (double deck coach), EW IV, eurocity coaches and IC Bt (driving trailer coach).

Realisation
In early summer 2005, measuring runs between Berne and Olten at speeds up to 200 km/h were performed with these type of coaches. The evaluation of the following comfort values was done: vibration behaviour according UIC 518 and UIC 513, interior pressure variations according UIC 660 and interior noise behaviour according prEN 3381:2001. Additionally, the running stability according UIC 518 of some coaches was evaluated.

Customer Advantage
Because of the high flexibility of the measuring equipment of PROSE, the measurements on such an inhomogeneous measuring composition was possible in a very short time. As a result of the well-defined presentation of the important results, the costumer was able to identify and initiate the fundamental measures.

Customer Requirement
The final customer SBB found the running behaviour of some vehicles of the type Tm 234 012 to be unsatisfactory. For that reason examination of the specific modes of vibrations hat to be performed in order to develop remedial actions.

Realisation
PROSE Ltd. was assigned by the manufacturer Winpro Ltd. to perform test runs on the "Ant" and to report on the running behaviour of the vehicle. PROSE carried out the test runs and found the reasons of the bad behaviour of the vehicle. After the suspected parts were replaced, PROSE repeated the test runs and confirmed the improvements.

Customer Advantage
Based on the results of the measurments, the customer was able to start successful modification actions on the affected tractors in a very short time.

Customer Requirement
The B7 coaches running in Norway had been approved for a maximum speed of 150 km/h. Now they should run at a speed of 160 km/h in regular service.

Realisation
In order to verify the running stability behaviour of the coach at speeds higher than 150 km/h, test runs were conducted and assessed by PROSE Ltd. in October 2005.

Customer Advantage
The increase of the permissible maximum speed of the trains allows to shorten the travel times of the passengers and to realise more frequent circulations of the rolling stock.
A test team of PROSE was involved in another project in Norway at that time and could conduct the measurements very spontaneously and cost-saving.

Customer Requirement
The DVZO had problems with the wear of the wheel flange of the its Be 4/4 locomotive number 15. In order to validate an earlier measurement of the wheel profiles and to record the profiles of the locomotive exactly, the DVZO ordered a profile measurement.

Realisation
In middle of November 2005, PROSE measured the profiles of all wheels of the locomotive with a laser profile measuring device at the depot of DVZO in Bauma .

Customer Advantage
Thanks to the immediate analysis of the measuring data, the results of the measurements could be discussed with the customer directly after the measurements. Based on the results, the customer could initiate immediately the necessary steps.

Customer Requirement
Within the scope of noise reduction, wheelnoise-absorber had been developed for RhB to reduce curve squeal in small radius curves.
The efficiency of these absorber had to be verified by tests.

Realisation
These noise measurements were combined with brake measurements, which were conducted to validate the new wheelset-design of RhB. For comparison reasons, the noise was measured underneath two bogies, one equipped with absorber and a second without.
To detect the curve radius, a gyro was used.

Customer Advantage
As a result of the measurements, the efficiency of the wheelnoise-absorber was proved. Therefore, a clear basis for a decision to install the wheelsets-absorber was given.

Customer Requirement
Complete passenger trains should be delivered to the Luxemburg railways. One element during the commissioning was the functional test of the transition when the train passes from the German section of the line to the Luxembourgish section.

Realisation
In order to perform the transition test runs, both the German and the Luxembourgish network hat to be used. An extraordinary approval of the German authority (EBA) was necessary, as the Luxembourgish version of the train was not yet approved in Germany. After the approval for these test runs was requested by PROSE based on the necessary documents, the test runs were carried out with PROSE as technical supervisor.

Customer Advantage
Due to the focusing of the activities (organisation of the application and the conduction of test runs as accreditd laboratory) unnecessary interfaces were avoided. The hole process could be conducted efficiently.
The acceptance of the results by the authorities was assured by PROSE as a certified laboratory by the German Railway Authority.

Customer Requirement
WALLYPOWER 118 is a fast motor yacht (crusing speed 60 kts). It is equipped with three water jets, powered by two diesel-engines and three gas turbines. For transmission, three Maag-Gears with Multi-Disc-Clutches are used. These Multi-disc Clutches showed an intense wear in short time, therefore the behaviour when the clutch is engaged was analysed.

Realisation
PROSE Ltd. was commissioned to carry out measurements of pressure and revolution on the power transmission.

Customer Advantage
The results of the measurements showed, that all parameters are within the required limit if the Multi-Disc-Clutch is operated correctly.

Customer Requirement
Curve squeal could be reduced on railways not only by taking noise abatement measures on rolling stock but also by means of interventions on the bends of the track itself. In the case of lines such as the MOB (Montreux-Oberland Bernois Railway), special conditions are found: potential options are restricted by the metre gauge, tight curve radii, steep gradients and concentrated traction system.

Realisation
The study addresses the causes of and parameters influencing curve squeal, and explains the various types of intervention possiblities. Considering the initial conditions and the requirements of the MOB, together with a broad evaluation of commercially available products possible solutions are derived. In the final step the efficiency of installed systems has been assessed by noise measurements.

Customer Advantage
For small railway companies it is not possible to conduct research, on the other side authorities are not able to support them due to lack of and technical and personal strength. PROSE is able to pass by this gap, as our company provide experts with broad knowledge and field experience. Together with our equipment which is state of the art, we can accompany the costumer from his initial problem to the final assessment of a solution.

Customer Requirement
On the Lantau Airport Railway EMU’s, which were delivered in the late 1990ies, problems occured in operation. PROSE was commissioned to redesign and deliver a modified version of the support assemblies.

Realisation
In order to find a design solution which sustains the loads occurring during the service operation the following measures have been taken into account: measurement of load collectives during service operation on the existing supports, design of new solution by means of 3D CAD system, structural integrity study by means of modern FE-Analysis tools, manufacturing of a prototype assembly and performance of a vibration test according EN 61373 and long term field test on a trainset equipped with re-designed supports.

Customer Advantage
By implementing the re-designed antenna supports the overall safety of the MTRC system can be improved. After the installation of the new supports the inspection intervals can be increased considerably.

Customer Requirement
The running dynamics type test of the new NSB EMU Class 72 was already performed by PROSE Ltd. Now the running behaviour with worn wheel profiles should be assessed by means of additional test runs. The objective was the final approval of the vehicles, given by the Norwegian authorities (SJT).

Realisation
A concept was elaborated in collaboration with the supplier and the operator of the vehicles, which met the requirements of the Norwegian authorities. The test runs and the evaluation of the running behaviour were performed by PROSE Ltd. and assessed in a final report.

Customer Advantage
Due to the great experience of PROSE in vehicle approval and measurements, the test runs were performed cost-efficient.

Customer Requirement
The aim of this project was to show, that the refurbishment of the rolling stock, with wheel sets with low residual stress and composite brake blocks will result into a noise level according to the legislative limits.

Realisation
First of all it has to be analysed whether the RhB railway with it is narrow gauge has a similar noise emission as a normal gauge railway. Second there was not known a proper location for noise measurements. As the new brake blocks lead to a smooth wheel surface it has to focused that the rail roughness is well below the wheel ones. By additional measurements PROSE Ltd. identified a location for the final noise measurements.

Customer Advantage
As PROSE Ltd. was in charge as a general contractor, the benefit for RhB is to reduce organisation and communication with several suppliers. Adding the large competence of PROSE in the field of noise in railway application, as we are looking at it as a hole wheel-rail-interaction, RhB has confidence on reliable results from a certified body.

Customer Requirement
Derailments caused by problems with the bogies should be analysed and improvements should be defined. Deformations of the bulk wagon should be investigated and a concept for possible modifications should be presented.

Realisation
By means of state of the art simulation tools (ADAMS Rail for dynamical simulations and NATRAN/PATRAN for Finite Elements Analysis) the problems could be identified and modifications to remediate the problems were defined.

Customer Advantage
By implementing the modifications worked out, the reliability and availability of the bulk wagons was improved tremendously.

Customer Requirement
For passenger and freight wagons and for track superstructure noise reduction measures are already begun. Therefore the noise emissions of traction vehicles will be dominated in the near future, especially by older locomotives with new or noise retrofitted wagons or older trainsets. This study should give an overview about typical noise sources and show measures to reduce the noise of traction vehicles.

Realisation
In this study first the different vehicle types, which are operated in Switzerland, are listed. For every vehicle in this list and for every typical operation condition the dominating noise source is identified. And for every dominating noise source counter measures are discussed and evaluated in a cost-benefit diagram.

Customer Advantage
With this study the Federal Office for the Environment (FOEN) gets an overview about typical dominating noise sources and measures to reduce the noise emissions of traction vehicles. With these information the Federal Office for the Environment (FOEN) can apply proposals to railway operators or other authorities and represent them with well-founded arguments (costs, benefits).
 

Customer Requirement
As a part of the commissioning and approval process of the Glacier Express panorama coaches, the behaviour of the whole brake system should be verified at rapid braking and during long-time braking at a continiously declining track. Furthermore the comfort and the lateral running behaviour should be assessed. Finally the compliance with the limits concerning the noise emissions had to be proved.

Realisation
Test runs have been performed in order to survey the above mentioned issues. PROSE Ltd. conducted the test runs, provided and installed the measurement equipment, evaluated the measuring data and assessed the results. The tests were performed in a train containing the new coaches and other coaches already in service, as this corresponds to a situation in regular service.
In order to assess the braking system behaviour, longitudinal accelerations, pressures in the brake cylinders and temperatures at the wheels were measured in both types of coaches. Based on these measurements a statement could be made on the longitudinal dynamics and the response times of the brakes during rapid braking. During the long-time braking at a continiously declining track the development of the pressure in the brake cylinders and of the temperature on the wheel tread could be assessed.
The comfort and the lateral running behaviour were examined by means of acceleration sensors in the coaches and by means of deflection sensors between the bogie and the coach. The so called Wz-value was calculated as result of the comfort evaluation. The lateral accelerations and deflections were analysed when passing several switches.
The noise measurements were made according to the standard EN 3381 inside the coach and according to EN 3095 during pass-by. A report was delivered to the customer presenting the assessment of all results.All test runs have been conducted within a short time and using only one test train.

Customer Advantage
In order to limit the extent and the costs to a very low level, all investigations were conducted at the same test train, even though various issues were concerned. Furthermore the different issues were assessed during the same test runs. As a consequence even the operator had to provide the coaches only once and only for a short time.

Customer Requirement
Within the procurement of 8 EMUs of type GTW 2/6 by the „Vinschgerbahn“, it is foreseen to run the trainsets on a reactivated line in South Tirol. Reasonable by the reactivate services it is necessary to get the approval for tracklines as well as for vehicles by the railway authority. Therefore, the performance tests of the wheel slide control were necessary.

Realisation
The manufacturer, Stadler Altenrhein Ltd., assigned PROSE Ltd. to execute test of the wheel slide protection according to UIC 541-05. PROSE is an accreditated test institute and certified by the German railway authority (EBA) for the performance tests on the braking systems. PROSE provided the tests in Switzerland and evaluated the results in a report which can be handed out to the railway authority.

Customer Advantage
By performing the brake tests in Switzerland all advantages of the proximity of the test site to the factory of the manufacturer have been used. By the preliminary definition of the exact test program together with the authorities, it was made sure that an approval decision can be taken based on the tests.

Customer Requirement
The multi-sytem locomotive SBB Re484 shall be homologated for use in Switzerland and Italy. For this purpose noise measurements have to be performed. The aim of these measurements is to prove the compliance with the limit values claimed by the Swiss authorities and the customer's specification. The measurements were done according to the standards prEN ISO 3095 and prEN ISO 3381.

Realisation
In August 2004 noise measurements were done by PROSE both at standstill of the locomotive and during running. PROSE did not only conduct the measurements themselves. In addition PROSE suggested proper measuring sites and measuring lines, checked the availability and organized their reservation. The sound pressure was measured at 16 positions around the locomotive and inside the driver's cabin. For this purpose two completely independent measuring- and recording-systems were used. Therefore the measurements could take place inside and outside the locomotive at the same time. The measuring results were available already after each record. Based on these results, possible anomalies or an exceeding of the limit values could be observed on the spot. As a consequence further additional measurements could be done at once in order to analyse these anomalies.

Customer Advantage
The preparations, the measurements and the final report were all managed by PROSE. The integrated handling of all tasks lead to a fast and straight performance of the type test. As the measuring data was analysed instantaneously unexpected characteristics of the vehicle could directly be analysed closer during the measurements.

Customer Requirement
For cost effective and reliable local services with maglev trains diverse mechanical components had to be optimized for meeting the specific requirements. Essential requirements were broad entrance doors, constant distance between all entrance doors, extended carriage body height, seats and standing room for passengers, improved acoustic behaviour inside the car body, fulfilment of fire protection  and crash requirements.

Customer Requirement
Caused by reorganisation within an European railway test laboratory Probotec Ltd. needed on a short notice a railway test laboratory certified by the German railway authority to perform a complete running dynamic type test according to UIC 518 on the goods wagon of type Tanoos, which was equipped with the Probotec-AM-III-bogies.

Realisation
PROSE was assigned by Probotec to perform the running dynamic type test as general contractor. This work included also the choosing of the test lines and the organisation of the measuring runs. Thanks to boundary conditions in Switzerland enabling tests on a short notice and the partnership with the Swiss railway authority (BAV) and the operator Lötschbergbahn BLS well adjusted to working together, it was possible to organise the necessary measuring runs in a very short time frame. The PROSE measuring coach was used as driving test laboratory during the measuring runs. A complete running dynamic type test of the goods wagon was performed using measuring wheelsets of type DB-Minden. In cooperation with the German Eisenbahnbundesamt it was possible to agree on a test program in Switzerland which will enable the authorities to take a decision for an approval of the vehicle in Germany.

Customer Advantage
The flexibility and competence of our partners and of PROSE enabled us to organise the running dynamic type tests and to perform them with state of the art quality in a very short time frame.

Customer Requirement
Within the procurement of 80 EMU's of type GTW 2/6 by Thurbo AG, it is foreseen to run the trainsets also in Germany. For this reason it is necessary to get also the aproval by the German railway authority (EBA). Thus the performance of brake test runs is necessary.

Realisation
The manufacturer, Stadler Bussnang AG, ordered the test of the complete braking system at PROSE. PROSE is an accreditated test institute and certified by the German railway authority for the performance of tests on the braking system. PROSE provides the test specification, perfoms the brake tests and evaluates the results in a report which can be handed out to the German railway authority.

Customer Advantage
By performing the brake tests in Switzerland all advantages of the proximity of the test site to the factory of the manufacturer can be used. By the preliminary definition of the exact test programm together with the authorities it is made sure, that an approval decision can be taken based on the tests.

Customer Requirement
The articulated train sets PRA I und PRA II (DMUs both) correspond to the Danisch train sets IC3. The operating conditions are quite different between Denmark and Israel, especially concerning the network characteristics. Because of overload sitatuations at the running gears and the motor bogies, the real load had to be determined to have a basis to develop the adaptions of the trains to the service conditions in Israel.

Realisation
PROSE equipped a running gear and a motor bogie of each train set with strain gauges in a tight timetable in close cooperation with the operator Israel Railways. A measuring run was performed with each train set in loaded and tare condition.

Customer Advantage
The intercultural competencies of the measuring team of PROSE Ltd. enabled the costumer, to commission PROSE with the whole task. This enabled an extraordinary efficient performance of the task by PROSE and the operator Israel Railways with a minimum of interfaces. The risks of the measurement could be minimised because the competence of PROSE granted a save control of the measurement even in the ambitious conditions of high ambient temperatures with high humidity at the same time and a high number of measuring locations. Compared with competitors, the fast analysis and report generation was a clear advantage for our customer Bombardier Transportation.

Customer Requirement
Because of the political aim to reduce the noise emission of railbound goods traffic there is a necessity to evaluate the technical potential of noise reduction. Based on this investigation a limit value shall be defined which has to be reached by refurbished goods wagons.

Realisation
The influence of the different wagon characteristics (number of axles, bogie type, wheel type, status of the wheels, material of the brake blocks, carbody type, vehicle length) and of the speed of the train on the noise emissions had to be investigated. For this purpose noise measurements were performed during three nights. A test train was assembled for those measurements, which took place on the BLS-line between Kerzers and Müntschemier.

Customer Advantage
PROSE executed the whole project with all side activities as general contractor. Because of the measurements our customer has achieved the necessary knowledge to define the lowest limit value, which can be reached with a reasonable effort. By limiting the effort to the absolute necessary level it is possible to reduce the noise emitted by railbound goods traffic without increasing the costs for the rail traffic, what would cause an increase in road traffic.
Because many parameters in this measurements were known which are normally not known a great gain of knowledge was achieved. Hypothesis and arguments concerning the noise topic can be therefore judged better in the future.

PROSE engineers performed an enhancement and improvement of the test bench, which had been commissioned 1996. The vertical displacement of the individual measurung points was increased and the software was adapted in order to automatically produce the output as required by EN 14363.

Customer Requirement
Due to the strict noise guidelines for the articulated railcars operating in Seetal, Switzerland, the noise radiating from the compressor must be optimised. The sound absorbing provisions should be proposed and implemented with minimum complexity and cost.

Realisation
Tests of the noise generated by the compressor and analyse of possible noise dispersion patterns were used in order to develop a base for the design of the silencer. The silencer was drafted with respect to the guidelines and the very small space available and then constructed and tested. The tests showed, that the silencer lowered considerably the outside noise of the compressor.
Finally PROSE supplied the silencers for the articulated railcars for SBB, and for those for Regionalverkehr Mittelland.

Customer Advantage
The integrated nature of the contract allowed for the measuring, construction and implementation of the silencer to be performed with absolute minimum inconvenience and risk. Consequently the goal, to greatly reduce the noise pollution, was achieved with minimal time and expense.

PROSE engineers developed and built a fully automatic vehicle test bench, which measures the wheel load deviations of entire vehicle on various twist conditions. A defined sequence of the test is stored in the control computer, after the measurement a protocoll in accordance with EN 14363 is printed. Wagons, coaches, EMU's and locomotives can be tested.
The fielt of application of the test bench is in the final quality check in the vehicle production as well as in the final inspection in maintenance.

Customer Requirement
For the articulated railcar (GTW) for Regionalverkehr Mittelland as well as for the nearly identical railcar for THURBO AG, the running dynamic approval should be achieved by appropriate measurements. The costs for this tests should be limited to the absolute necessary.

Realisation
For extension of approvals or for approval of vehicles, that are similar to already approved vehicles UIC 518 as well as prEN 14363 allow simplified homologation processes. The detailed scope of the necessary tests is applied for and justified to the approval authorities. In the case of the articulated railcar for Regionalverkehr Mittelland (RM) it was possible to get the approval by performing a simplified running dynamic measurement with only a measuring the running stability.
Thus it was possible to perform the measurement within one day after one day of setting up the measuring equipment on the train. Only the vehicle speed and the lateral bogie accelerations had to be measured and recorded.

By using the potential of simplifi cation fo the measurement it was possible to achieve a quick and cost-efficient running dynamic approval. The vehicle was only required for two days.

Customer Requirement
RENFE has ordered 16 high speed trains type AVE S102 from a consortium between Bombardier Transportation and Talgo. These trains will be in service on the Madrid - Barcelona line. Bombardier is the supplier of the 32 powerheads of those trains, which are the first trains to be homologated according to the new European Interoperability Specification (TSI).
PROSE is performing the running dynamic type test up to a cruising speed of 330km/h and the noise type test for the power head on behalf of Bombardier Transportation.
Furthermore we support the drive specialists from Bombardier Transportation in optimising the drive software also from a point view of the mechanical loads.

Realisation
PROSE Ltd. as accredited and certified laboratory executed the running dynamic and noise type test according to TSI. PROSE Ltd. prepared the specification and evaluated the results in a report, which could be submitted directly to the authorities.

Customer Requirement
Talgo Oy was commissioned by the Finnish State Railways VR with the supply of 20 double deck sleeping cars type Edm. The vehicles will be equipped with bogies designed and built by PROSE/WINPRO.

Realisation
The development of the bogie was performed by the development team of PROSE. The production of the bogies has taken place with WINPRO in Winterthur under the technical supervision of PROSE. PROSE is also responsible for the structural tests and the further type tests of the running gears.

Customer Advantage
The development of this type of bogie makes Talgo Oy independent from the supplies by competing railway rolling stock manufacturers.

PROSE engineers performed several measurements on the new LRVs for the municipal transport services in Zürich named "Cobra". In order to get exact values of the mechanical load on the gear boxes several strain gauges were applied on the inner side of one gear box. In parallel the accelerations of the gear box, the revolution, the torsional and the bending moment as well as the braking and traction effort were measured.
As the customer wanted to do the evaluation of the data by himself, the data was provided on CD.

PROSE Engineers have performed measurements of load collectives on the Øresund trains during several weeks. For those measurements the bogies were equipped with nearly 100 sensors measuring accelerations, mechanical stresses, forces and motions. As the bogie type of the Øresund trains is used for Bombardiers REGINA-trains as well, the measurements are valid for both train types.
After an extensive evaluation life times of single components can be calculated and predicted. Thereby our customer gets the relevant knowledge for the design of further bogie-types, as he knows the mechanical load that those bogies are exposed to.

PROSE Engineers are performing measurements of load collectives on the bogies of the CP2000 EMUs. For these measurements the articulation joint between the carbodies as well as the bogies were equipped with some 30 sensors measuring accelerations, mechanical stresses and forces.
After an extensive evaluation life times of single components can be calculated and predicted. Thereby our customer gets the relevant knowledge to validate the design assumptions and for the design of further bogie-types, as he knows the mechanical load that those bogies are exposed to.

To get the ability to manage the hight raised traffic on the network of the Greek railways with regard to the Olympic Games in 2004, O?E has ordered by Stadler Rail AG 17 DMUs. Additionally 12 DMUs in metre gauge version which will operate on the Peloponnes lines are ordered. Because of the concept of the vehicle the axle loads of the power unit in the middle of the train are higher than allowed. Therefore a new developed axle load compensation structure is used on those trains, in order to shift the weight from the traction unit to the two end bogies.
For test purpose the system was established on one of the normal gauge DMUs. PROSE realized all necessary measurements to verify the function of the load compensation. In the same test series, some accelerations on the bogies and the related equipment were measured for internal product verification purposes.
Additionally PROSE realized indoor noise measurement based on the prEN 3381 standard.

With a radar, a laser-vibrometer and rotation speed and acceleration sensors phenomena such as longitudinal and torsional axle movements and drive oscillations were detected and could be quantified. Thereby it was possible for the manufacturer to optimize the traction software in order to reach an optimal traction performance and to avoid undesirable effects.

PROSE Engineers have equipped one of the new high performance locomotives for the Italian Railways (FS) with sensors at the bogie in order to validate the performance of the traction software.
With a radar, a laser-vibrometer and rotation speed and acceleration sensors phenomena like longitudinal and torsional axle movements and drive oscillations were detected and could be quantified. Thereby it was possible for the manufacturer to optimize the traction software in order to reach an optimal traction performance.

For those measurements heavy cargo trains were towed from Basel via the Gotthard to Bellinzona, while the bogies were equipped with sensors measuring forces and mechanical stresses in the bogie components.

SBB Cargo has ordered 10 locomotives of the german BR 185 (named Re 482 at SBB) from Bombardier Transportation. The first locomotive of the series, which is build as part of a series of locomotives for the Deutsche Bahn AG, is delivered in February 2002. The last locomotive will arrive in Switzerland by end of June 2002.
PROSE has assumed the project management for the conception of the service concerning the rolling stock for the new freight-locomotives under consideration of all technical and economical aspects. The following points have to be treated:

• Building up of the Know How within the Service Team
• Setup of processes
• Setup of organization
• Representation of SBB Cargo (Service Rolling Stock) in the commissioning team and securing of the interface to the supplier of the vehicles and to foreign partners.

Customer Requirement
Running dynamic measurements for approval as well as comfort measurements and load collective measurements had to be performed on the new articulated railcars GTW.

Realisation
The measurements took place in the US in winter 2004. The running dynamic measurements were performed one directly after the other. In spite of the test service which took place on the line, it could be achieved to finish the measurements as previously planned. Additional customer requirements concerning new measuring positions could also be taken into account on short notice.

PROSE engineers have equipped one of the new high performance locomotives for New Jersey Transit at the Transportation Technology Center TTCI in Pueblo, Colorado with sensors at the bogie in order to validate the performance of the traction software.

Thereby it was possible for the manufacturer to optimize the traction software in order to reach an optimal traction performance.

SBB placed an order for new narrow electric multiple units of type GTW 2/8 (SBB-type RABe 520) for the traffic on the line through the swiss lake valley between Luzern and Lenzburg with Stadler. PROSE carried out both, the running dynamic type test following the simplified method according to UIC 518 including a comfort measurement according to UIC 513, as well as the noise type test according to prEN ISO 3095 and prEN ISO 3381.
PROSE designed also a damper that optimised the exterior noise of the cooling fan of the compressor.
