Customer requirement:
Bernmobil commissioned PROSE AG to examine the combinations of different tram vehicles for recip-rocal recovery in case of failure within the scope of the network expansion in Bern (Tram BernWest, RBS Line G). The permissible combinations were to be demonstrated and should serve the BM control centre as decision guidance.

Realisation:
The project handling occurred in three phases. 
In the first phase, fundamentals relevant for the recovery were compiled and presented in an overview. These included:
• Weights
• Permissible longitudinal compressive forces
• Coupling systems
• Possible influences of different control systems
• Legal fundamentals

The possible combinations of different vehicle types on the existing route sections were initially as-sessed and categorised in the second phase. The assessment of safety against derailment in towing or pushing operation occurred afterwards. A categorisation of possible combinations in “permissible – permissible under restrictions – not permissible” emerged as a result. Recovery by means of utilisation of a heave-duty road vehicle was also incorporated.

In the third phase, the results were summarised in checklists for the control centre and the depot per-sonnel.

Customer advantage:
The treatment of this subject matter by PROSE on purely a theoretical basis occurred in a first step without the involvement of the daily operation staff and thus allowed a natural view. A consistent point of view could be achieved through the systematic treatment. The assessment by the PROSE running-gear technology specialists led to decisive findings and towards determination of operationally restric-tive boundary conditions.

Customer Requirement
In order to be allowed to run and to work on the various infrastructure networks these grinding machines have to be homologated by the respective authority of each country. “GRIZZLY 104” is already in successful operation in Switzerland and France since many years bearing the necessary homologations. In order to be able to be engaged in Germany “GRIZZLY 104” is obliged to be homologated by the German EBA.

Realisation
PROSE Ltd was mandated by Scheuchzer SA to organize, lead and perform the entire homologation process together with the relevant authorities. Not only measuring campaigns with respect to brakes, noise, vibrations, EMC and running dynamics were to be performed but a major part of the task consisted in preparing the analysis and verifications including the expertises required by EBA in all the fields of this vehicle. This process took several months to be completed particularly due to the fact that the vehicle was originally built in accordance with the relevant Swiss and French standards applicable at the time of its construction and manufacturing. Those standards are not fully congruent with today’s EN standards.

Customer Advantage
After some nine months of intense work and negotiations with manufacturers, assessors and authorities EBA issued the homologation on the 22nd of December 2010 and “GRIZZLY 104” is therefore authorized to start up working in Germany.

Customer Requirement
PROSE was commissioned by Matisa Matériel Industriel S.A. to carry out running dynamic tests on two track maintenance vehicles. The aim of the test was to demonstrate that the vehicles met the requirements according to standard EN 14363. The test reports should give the basis for an approval in Germany and France.

Realisation
In order to assess the running dynamics acceleration sensors were installed on the bogies and the car body. To optimise resources both vehicles were tested together in a train composition. The statistical evaluation and the following test reports led to a successful approval procedure for the two vehicles.
Additionally all of the operational services were carried out by PROSE.

Customer Advantage
Using synergies the tests were performed at lower costs and in a short time.

Customer Requirement
PROSE was commissioned to assess the driving safety of heavy vehicle compositions.

Realisation
For assessing the driving safety of heavy train compositions in push mode, the movements in the undercarriage and between the cars of the composition were measured in real operation and compared with analytical predictions.

Customer Advantage
Confirmation of the predictions by the driving tests creates additional trust among approval authorities for the planned modification of the operating conditions.

Customer Requirement 
In order to evaluate cabin bearings the transmission properties and the post oscillatory behaviour of various types of cabin bearings should be determined on two snow groomers.
PROSE was commissioned by Schwab Schwingungstechnik with the execution of these vibration measurements.

Realisation
PROSE installed acceleration sensors in the running gear and cabin of the snow groomers. During the test runs on level ground the vibrations were measured its transmission behaviour was determined. On a test run over a log the post oscillatory behaviour after an excitation pulse was determined.

Customer Advantage
Using the measuring results Schwab Schwingungstechnik was able to supply their customer 'Prinoth' with an objective basis for evaluating the offered cabin bearings. The measurements were carried out within one day.

Customer Requirement
The new six-unit train set FLIRT TILO differs from the vehicles which have already been approved in terms of wheel profiles. By using the simplified method of running dynamics measurements according to EN14363, PROSE had to demonstrate that the vehicle also running safely and smoothly with new wheel profiles.

Realisation 
The vehicle was fitted with the corresponding sensors for the measurement of accelerations at the bogie and the body. Similarly, at the request of our customer, accelerations were measured at additional four axle bearings. In order to achieve a broad statistical base, measurements were taken on different track sections in Switzerland. The statistical analysis tool in use was the PROSE-developed software RunDyME.

Customer Advantage
Thanks to the flexibility and experience of PROSE within the area of technical driving measurements, the measurements on the TILO FLIRT were completed within a short timeframe.

Customer Requirement
For a new double deck coach, Transtech Oy required proof of speech intelligibility of announcements at the passenger seats. This proof is required by TSI-PRM (persons with reduced mobility). PROSE was commissioned by the notified body SCONRAIL AG to perform the necessary measurements and analyses.

Realisation
Measurements of this kind require specific measuring equipment and methods. Beside the microphones and the recording system a standardised sound source is needed. The measurements were performed on two coaches within two days. Following the tests the according evaluation has been produced.

Customer Advantage
PROSE is able to perform this new kind of tests on passenger coaches, required by the TSI-PRM. Because of the standardised tools and methods it is possible to execute these tests efficiently.

Customers Requirements
PROSE was commissioned with sound measurements to identify the effect of different rail damper systems on a certain track section. Therefore the track decay rate and noise mitigation of all installed systems were measured separately. 

Realisation
Four different rail dampers have been installed in serial on a ballasted track with concrete sleepers and UIC 60 rails. Of the original track and every track situation with applied absorbers the track decay rate was measured. By pass by tests according to EN ISO 3095 the noise levels have been determined during the day. Additional a freight train with certain vehicle types of different brake systems was used to operate at different constant speeds over the measuring section. 

Customer Advantage
Preposition for the application of rail dampers in Switzerland behind the technical permission are fundamental results according to their noise mitigation effect. For railway noise prediction using modern calculation tools like sonRAIL the input parameters have been determined, to estimate the noise mitigation of rail dampers on track sections in future. 

Customer Requirement
For the single railway and ramp vehicles WKE-RC, produced by Matisa Matériel Industriel SA, the braking performance had to be measured in accordance with UIC 544-1.

Realisation
The braking measurements were carried out close to the production site of the customer by means of drop-off tests. The tests and the operational services were organised by PROSE. The measurements of the braking distance for two loading conditions have been performed successfully just in one day.

Customer Advantage
As PROSE owns a measuring coach with an appropriate trailer coupling and is also able to offer all operational services, this leads to an efficient and effective test planning and handling for our customers. This lowers the time and expenses for our customer.

Customer Requirement
PROSE was commissioned by Matisa Matériel Industriel S.A. to carry out technical drive tests in accordance with EN 14363 on a wagon for track maintenance with a portal crane in different loading conditions. The objective was an approval for use on the German rail network. 
 
Realisation
In order to assess the behaviour of running dynamics acceleration sensors were installed on the bogies and the structure. Based on the measuring report PROSE provided also the necessary expert's report to get the permission of the German Federal Railway Authority to operate on the German railway network. Additionally all of the operational services were carried out by PROSE.

Customer Advantage
With the competence of PROSE Ltd. our client received a complete package for the homologation of his vehicle.

Customer Requirement
As the new train still did not have a driving characteristical approval, Siemens commissioned PROSE to carry out the monitoring of the running stability.

Realisation
The train was equipped with several acceleration sensors. During the following test journeys, the running stability was monitored by PROSE.

Customer Advantage
Just a few days after the request, PROSE was on site and enabled the test journeys to go ahead, despite the lack of driving characteristics approval.

Customer Requirement
On behalf of Rhätischen Bahn, PROSE carried out tests, in which operational parameters (loading, swivel angle, etc.) of a safe operation of the Giraffe were guaranteed.
The criteria considered was, on the one hand, stability of the Giraffe when stationary but also the safety against derailing when on the move.

Realisation
In order to prove the stability of the Giraffe being tested, it was put into operation both regarding track position and operational parameters in extreme situations and the stability viewed with regards to an increase in the additional load. The proof of the safety against derailment was carried out whilst moving in accordance with EN 14363. The vehicle was brought to the most inconvenient track position parameters through the continuous increase of the swing out until it was brought to the point of derailment. From this point, the allowed threshold values for the operational parameters were subsequently able to be closed.

Customer Advantage
Thanks to the tests carried out, Rhätische Bahn is now able to operate their aerial work platform coach verifiably without any danger to people or material.

Customer Requirement
The transport service Köln KVB requires an approval to run the tram both on the tramway and on the railway track between Cologne and Bonn. Therefore it was necessary to perform tests on the anti-sliding system in accordance with EBO (railway construction and operating regulations). TÜV SÜD Rail GmbH commissioned PROSE as a subcontractor to perform the necessary measurements.

Realisation
It was a challenge to adapt the test requirements for railway vehicles to the very different characteristics of a tram. The tests were performed in Cologne and at the Wildenrath test centre. The unique situation in this case was the hydraulic brake system and the high deceleration capacity. In good cooperation between expert, manufacturer, suppliers of the brake system and the test lab it was possible to complete these measurements successfully.

Customer Advantage
Despite the difficult test requirements the measurements were successfully performed and completed before the onset of winter. With the aspired approval according to EBO, the vehicle can be employed on the entire railway network of KVB.

Customer Requirement
The maintenance of standard qauge wheel sets by various rail operators and maintenance operators in Switzerland should be made uniform. The VÖV - Expert Group Vehicles Standard Gauge and the RTE project management (Regelwerk Technik Eisenbahn [Railway Engineering Policy]) have planned a RTE regulation for the maintenance of standard gauge wheel sets. This shall apply equally for wheel sets on motor vehicles, railway coaches and freight wagons. PROSE was commissioned by VÖV to prepare a concept for this future RTE regulation.

Realisation
As a first step, a general overview of available national and international standards, directives and regulations of the topic was sought after. To start off the project, a common workshop with representatives from the member firms of the Expert Group Vehicles Standard Gauge and was carried out and the procedure from there was defined. Due to visits to the various maintenance firms in Switzerland for motor vehicles, railway coaches and freight wagons, PROSE has obtained an insight into each company’s processes and the internal operating processes. During talks with professional specialists on site it was discussed as to on which points the standards situation is unclear and where general practice-oriented information regarding maintenance is lacking. From the information acquired like this, the everyday practice regarding wheel sets was able to be summarised into a concept for the planned RTE regulation.

Customer Advantage
The future RTE regulation makes the maintenance of standard gauge wheel sets in Switzerland uniform and gives clear and practice oriented recommendations as to the prescribed work steps, where the standards are unclear or where information is lacking. Through this, the collaboration between rail operators, maintenance companies and suppliers of wheel set components is made easier. The future RTE regulation also gives an overview of the standards, directives and regulations which apply to this subject matter.

Customer Requirement
To determine the wheelset resistance on several driving axles of SBB’s DOSTO vehicles.

Realisation
PROSE used suitable measuring equipment to measure the wheelset resistances of several driving axles at the customer’s location.

Customer Advantage
Thanks to the flexibility of PROSE, the measurements were organized and performed in a short time.Since the wheelset resistance is very low (a few micro-ohms to a few milli-ohms), special measuring equipment and corresponding measurement technique are required. PROSE has the necessary materials and knowledge. Since the measuring equipment is compact and the individual measurements take little time, wheelset resistance measurements can be performed at short notice. The measurements can be performed at the customer’s location, and therefore there is no need to transport the axles.

Customer Requirement
The locomotive of the RhB Ge 4/4 no. 182, the "Bernina-Krokodil" was brought back from France to Poschiavo in Switzerland in 2000, where it had been stationed before it was sold to France. The locomotive was in a very bad condition and was restored by the "Club1889" in the last decade by volunteers. To get the permission to operate the vehicle required to pass tests to check the braking power, which PROSE has carried out on behalf of RhB.

Realisation
The locomotive was equipped with the corresponding sensors for the measurement of speed and air pressure (or vacuum depression). PROSE carried out the braking distance measurements with an RhB train driver both on level ground and on gradients as steep as 50‰.

Customer Advantage
With the one day measurements performed by the accredited testing laboratory PROSE, RhB gained the new approval for operation in a straightforward way.

Customer Requirement
The double deck commuter train sets, which are employed by SBB for the Zurich S-Bahn (urban trains), will be modernised. Amongst other things, the air conditioning is to be upgraded. Therefore, the composition of the current noise development both inside and outside of a coach should be determined. The results of the measurements are to enable a comparison with the state following the modernisation.

Realisation
On a control cab coach in stationary mode the exterior noise as well as the noise in the coach was measured in various operational states. Additionally the noise measurements were carried out in the ventilation duct in order to determine the insulation performance.

Customer Advantage
PROSE was able to provide a single provider solution for all measurements for CIDEON. Both the carrying out of acoustic type tests in accordance with standards as well as special measurements - for example for the clarification and avoidance of noise problems - are strengths of PROSE, from which our customers can benefit.

Customer Requirement
The ETR 245 class electrical multiple unit supplied and produced by ALSTOM, designated CSA (Convoglio Servizio Aeroportuale), shall be operated by LeNord S.r.l. to transport passengers to Milan Malpensa airport. Tests performed by PROSE proved the vehicle satisfies the conditions of all applicable standards and thus the prerequisites exist for approval by Italian authorities.

Realisation
PROSE received its first job from an Italian notified body to perform measurements on the ALSTOM electrical multiple unit ETR 245. After a successful audit by the "Ministero delle Infrastrutture e dei Trasporti", PROSE performed the brake and slide control system tests in compliance with UIC 544-1 and 541-05 and ran dynamics tests in compliance with EN 14363 using ALSTOM measuring wheelsets.
All tests were performed at night and were successfully concluded. PROSE also successfully expanded its technical competence into Italy through intensive collaboration with the Notified Body RINA.

Customer Advantage
With rapid and flexible handling of the preparations and the subsequent measurements, the project was successfully concluded. Now there is an alternative in Italy to the testing laboratory of Trenitalia.

Aufgabenstellung
Zur Überwachung der Rollmaterialsanierung in der Schweiz hat das BAV seit 2003 insgesamt sechs stationäre Lärmmessstellen an den Hauptverkehrsrouten eingerichtet. An diesen Monitoringstellen soll jährlich einmal die Schienenrauheiten durch direkte Messung nach EN 15681 ermittelt werden.

Umsetzung
PROSE führt mit eigenem Schienenrauheitsmessgerät diese Messungen an den zweispurigen Streckenabschnitten einmal während der Sommermonate durch.

Kundennutzen
Durch Kenntnis der Schienenrauheit und Gleisbauart kann der Anteil der Lärmemissionsanteil vom Gleis charakterisiert werden. Besonders bei modernen oder umgerüsteten Fahrzeugen mit K-Sohle bzw. Scheibenbremsen ist der Emissionspegel stark von der Schienenrauheit abhängig. Durch diese Art von Langzeituntersuchungen können auch Entwicklungen besser erkannt werden, sowie rechtzeitig Schienenschleifmassnahmen angeordnet werden.

Customer Requirement:
Design of an aluminium car body including all necessary stress evidences, design according to the CWA specific aluminium profile technique Documentation of stress evidence for carriage body structure.

Realisation:
Realization of the complete technical documentation including drawings and evidences in cooperation with the customer according to his requirements Coordination of all interfaces to the vehicle bogie and vehicle components. Evidence of stress resistance regarding specific load for funicular railways.

Customer Advantage:
External handling of the complete working package including English documentation.

Customer Requirement
PROSE Ltd. was commissioned by an regional office in Southtirol with developing noise mitigation measures of the local railway routes. Due to the freight traffic and old rolling stock a high noise emission is given. Furthermore specific topographic situations at the Eisacktal e.g. the railway route at the sole of the valley is for residents unfair situation and cannot be improved by conventional noise barriers. Here realistic mitigation measures have to be developed and adapted to the track conditions.

Realisation
Conventional and modern mitigation measures for vehicles, infrastructure and operation have been described and estimated of their effects. The track section from Franzenfeste to Waidbruck was investigated by local visition. Rail corrugation occurs in curves with less than 300m radius and lead to high noise levels during pass by.

Costumers Advantage
The regional office and the department of environment have got a qualified analysis of track sections and topographic situations by experts. The acoustical effect of installed noise barriers have been estimated and proposals for additional mitigation measures were made. Also if the influence of rolling stock by the regional office is small, so by using this information the establishment of effective measures can be accelerated.

Customer Requirement
With the sale of an MPV to Siemens Powerlines in Austria, the vehicle had to obtain approval for Austria. Approval in Germany was also aimed for as the vehicle was also intended to be used in Germany at some point. PROSE was commissioned by Windhoff to carry out the necessary measurements in the areas of driving technique and braking/anti-skid.

Realisation
In the first test block at the end of 2009, the running dynamic tests were successfully completed. The tests regarding the brakes and the anti-sliding system have been completed in a second test block. Alongside the above mentioned measurements, vibration measurements on the driver's seat and wind power measurements were also carried out.

Customer Advantage
The tests on the vehicle helped to optimise the vehicle. With the approval for Germany in accordance with EBO, the vehicle platform can obtain approval in many European countries without much additional expenditure.

Customer Requirement
PROSE AG was commissioned with developing retrofit concepts to mitigate noise of older locomotives. Due to the rough wheel treads of older vehicles with cast iron brake blocks a lot of rolling noise is generated.

Realisation
By using modern composite brake blocks the wheel treads remain smooth and the rolling noise can be reduced significantly. Acousticians do describe the physical properties of sound generation and do define optimal mode of action of measures.

Customer Advantage
Our expertes of rail vehicle engineering, espacially in the field of bogie design and brake systems, do devolep retrofit concepts according to customer requirements of operation. The key of successful noise mitigation is to integrate the measures as effectively as required and as simply as possible into the existing vehicle design. Hence a safe and economic operation can continue to be guaranteed.

Customer requirement
Currently zb Zentralbahn performs maintenance at the two locations Stansstad and Meiringen. Both sites show a great need for refurbishment and optimisation.
The following questions were to be answered with regard to fleet renewal by 2025:
• Which is the optimal site variation?
• Which business model is optimal for zb from the period 2020 – 2040?
• What does an initial expansion step look like?

Realisation
The basis for the study was the given maintenance strategy as well as the planned inventory of the vehicle fleet in the years 2020 and 2040. The quantity structure for the maintenance could be determined as a result. The possible sites Stansstad, Meiringen (both existing), Lucerne and Giswil (both new) were included in the evaluation. Elements which flowed into their assessment are the necessary investment costs for renovation, renewal or new construction, operational requirements, political framework conditions as well as the labour market situation depending on each location. Four variations were examined as business models. These range from “mini” (no more maintenance by zb; everything is provided by partner firms) via “lean” (only operational maintenance through zb) and “today” (unchanged status) to “expansion” (perform additional maintenance tasks for other railways).
The evaluation occurred under inclusion of investments, disinvestments as well as opportunity and maintenance costs of different combinations according to the net present value method in comparison with the benefit or risks of individual variations. The variation with the best cost-benefit ratio was recommended to zb for follow-up. At the same time, PROSE compiled proposals for optimisation of maintenance as well as for the initial expansion step.

Customer advantage
Neutral decision-making bases for implementation of its maintenance strategy were available to zb through the independent assessment of different variations with regard to locations and business models. Based on the recommendation, zb started the “Fitness2011” refurbishment programme for optimisation of its workshops with regard to the need in the years 2020 / 2040.

Customer Requirement
Track renewal trains are assessed in accordance with the German EBO (Eisenbahn- Bau- und Betreibsordnung = Railway Building and Operation Order) as ancillary vehicles. Thehomologation of such vehicles by the German Federal office for the railway (EBA) requires running characteristics measurements according to the simplified procedures, only with accelerations in accordance with EN 14363. Simplified measurements generally require, however, a more detailed assessment of the results. Therefore, such measurement reports are to be assessed by an EBA certified assessor. Similar procedures are also realised in France and the Netherlands. PROSE has carried out the assessment for various track renewal trains en bloc and vehicles for the track renewal trains for several customers, of which the vehicles are used in Germany, France and the Netherlands.

Realisation
As track renewal trains are always individual vehicles and therefore the one-off cost for approval cannot be shifted of large series quantities, it is important to find efficient ways to carry out the approval. In a first step, the test specification is checked so that it can be guaranteed that an expertise can also be created as a result of the test report. In the case of deviations between the expected results and the results measured, the inspecting authority gives the customer rapid feedback, so that a solution can be found at low costs and with little time delay. The expertise is then created by the inspecting authority during the final phase of preparing the report so that the time delay is minimal.

Customer Advantage
It appears that the central topic during the approval stage is the hit quota and the processing time. No project can afford repeats and processing time of approval measurements and review often defines the time when the vehicle can be accepted by the authorities and can go into operation. The interaction between the inspecting authority and the assessor at PROSE ensures the efficient handling of this approval.

Customer Requirement
In accordance with the service agreement between Stadler Rail and Rhätischen Bahn (RhB), the travel comfort of the new Allegra trainsets was to be tested and compared with specified values. Our customer also required measurement data on the acting forces at the bogies for approval from the Swiss Federal Office of Transport (BAV).

Realisation
The accelerations inside the vehicle were measured with the corresponding sensors. In order to obtain an average comfort value (Wz value according to Sperling following the standard EN12299), the approval tests were performed across a large part of the RhB rail network. To determine the forces at the bogie, displacement sensors were attached to the bogie. Through cooperation with our customer we were able to calculate the forces through the corresponding stiffness values.

Customer Advantage
The tests on the trainset Allegra were important stages in the commissioning of the train as well as the approval process for the end customer RhB. Thanks to the support of our customer, Allegra was successfully put into operation.

Customer Requirement
For the new train set of RBS, the low-floor express multiple-unit train NexT PROSE had to verify the running stability and to measure the running comfort.

Realisation
With test runs between Bern and Solothurn at a 10% higher maximum speed the stability was evaluated in accordance with the simplified method of EN14363. Further on PROSE analysed the ride comfort of the new train.

Customer Advantage
With the results owner and manufacturer could judge the new train set.

Customer Requirement
Bombardier Transportation requires valid information on the stress of the driving wheel axle of the power unit AVE S102 in normal operation. The aim of the measurement was to determine actual stress as a basis for a service life calculation.

Realisation
With the help of strain gauges, axle stress measurements were carried out on the high-speed network in Spain. Following this, the measurement data was evaluated and a rainflow count was carried out, from which the service life can be calculated.

Customer Advantage
The results allow the customer to carry out a reliable service life calculation and therefore guarantee safe operation.

Customer Requirement
In order to determine the vibration parameter in accordance with EN 14033-3, vibration measurements should be carried out on all work places and in different operational states (in motion, stationary and in operation mode) of the two rail track building machines.

Realisation
Tests were carried out on the gravel grading machine R21 and the rail track tamping, leveling and aligning machine of the company MATISA Matériel Industriel SA in order to determine the whole body vibrations, which affect the operating personnel. The vibration parameters were determined for both the vehicle in motion and while in operation. The tests in motion were able to be carried out at the same time as the running dynamic tests.

Customer Advantage
PROSE owns the required measuring equipment (standard vibration measurement pad) and the expert knowledge for the determination of whole body vibrations in accordance with EN 14033-3. The measurements can be carried out in parallel with the (mostly required) running dynamic tests, which enables an economical realisation for our customers.

Customer Requirement
On behalf of Bombardier Transportation, load collective measurements should be carried out on a motor and trailer bogie of the regional trainset "Lötschberger“ from BLS. Additionally the comfort should be measured during the measurement runs.

Realisation
A motor and trailer bogie were equipped with strain gauges in order to measure the loads in the bogie frame. The comfort measurement took place using the corresponding acceleration sensors in the car body. Furthermore, using a mobile, triaxial acceleration sensor, local vibrations were recorded in order to later make a statement on vibrating parts in the passenger compartment and its subjective effect on the comfort of the passenger.

Customer Advantage
Due to the uncomplicated and swift processing and close cooperation with the customer and end customer, the project was able to be completed within the shortest amount of time - from the quotation to the delivery of the reports.

Customer Requirement
Bombardier Transportation required evidence that the diesel-electric powered locomotive of the type TRAXX F140 DE and the electric locomotive of the type P160 AC2 complied with the noise emission thresholds of TSI CR Noise and UIC 644. Additional interior and exterior noise tests had to be carried out for the F140 DE in accordance with guidelines from SNCF. Some special measurements provides Bombardier the further improvement of the acoustic properties of their locomotives.

Realisation
All measurements were carried out in the test centre in Wildenrath (Germany).
The exterior noise measurements defined in the TSI CR Noise and UIC 644 were carried out on both locomotives when stationary, in motion and during traveling with attached weight. Additionally the interior noise tests in motion were carried out. The train signal-horn was also checked in accordance with UIC 644. Further checks included the measurement of noise development during braking, passing by without traction and on test runs with heavy loads attached. On the F140 DE the audibility of the acoustic warning signals in the driver's cabin and the noise emission of the diesel motor were tested additionally.

PROSE was able to be the single provider for Bombardier for all the necessary tests on both locomotives. Both the acoustic type tests in accordance with standards as well as the special measurements are strengths of PROSE, from which our customers benefit.
Thanks to the good preparation of the tests and the flexibility in the carrying out of these, the extensive range of tests for both locomotives were able to be successfully completed in only two weeks, despite the poor weather conditions. Since the wheelset resistance is very low (a few micro-ohms to a few milli-ohms), special measuring equipment and corresponding measurement technique are required. PROSE has the necessary materials and knowledge. Since the measuring equipment is compact and the individual measurements take little time, wheelset resistance measurements can be performed at short notice. The measurements can be performed at the customer’s location, and therefore there is no need to transport the axles.

Customer Requirement
For its diesel electric powered locomotive Class66 type 941 EMD required evidence of the noise emissions according to TSI CR Noise and of the audibility of warning signals corresponding to UIC 643. This was the second acoustic type test on a Class66 for PROSE AG. The new test on a Class66 was required due to changes on the exhaust system.

Realisation
Even without train control system for the Swiss rail network the test runs could be carried out in Switzerland. PROSE organised the necessary drivers and permissions. All operational performances, test management and measurements were carried out by PROSE. Dynamic noise measurements at pass-by, during maximum acceleration and running at constant speed were carried out inside the driving cab. Noise emissions of the locomotive in various operational states were examined in stationary mode.
Additionally the audibility of warning signals, such as whistles and detonators, were also checked inside the driving compartment.

Customer Advantage
Thanks to the integral carrying out of tests, including the runs on the TSI reference tracks, all tests were able to be successfully completed within a week. Therefore the locomotive was available to the customer in a very short time.

Customer Requirement
The proof of stability in accordance with EN 14033-2 is traditionally carried out with analytical calculations (table calculations). The loading conditions with the lowest safety should be checked by means of running characteristic simulations.

Realisation
PROSE has created a parameterised model of crane vehicles on behalf of KIROW for various special tests, which can be easily adapted for the various crane models. With the model, the stability of the crane in operating position can be examined in detail.

With the aid of the simulation, the permissible manoeuvres can be calculated more accurately and therefore safety in operating the crane is increased.

The freight wagon manufacturer Ateliers d'ORVAL - Groupe ERMEWA from France required braking system, noise and strength measurements for a new type of freight wagon in order to obtain the approval in France.

Realisation
At the customer's request, tests for three types of brake pads were carried out. In a first phase, the manufacturer optimized the brake cylinder pressure in both empty and fully loaded states using the braking distances measured by PROSE. PROSE then carried out the applicable tests required for approval. The braking distance was determined by means of drop-off tests from 100 km/h and 120 km/h. Then thermal stability of the braking system was checked in the so-called Gotthard test (travelling in fully loaded condition with constant braking, such as on a gradient of 21%). All operational performance, test management and measurements as well as the exchange of brake pads were handled by PROSE. After the braking measurements, PROSE carried out noise measurements on two wagons with pass-by measurements on the TSI reference track.
A partner laboratory in Germany carried out strength tests in accordance with ERRI on a further wagon.

For these 4 locomotives that were ordered later, a simplified approval procedure was agreed between the authorities and the infrastructure operators from Sweden and Norway, LKAB as final customer and Bombardier as manufacturer. In the area of noise, the approval should be dependent on a comparable expertise between the locomotives IORE I and II. The EU directives offer such procedures, when there are special circumstances. This was clearly the case here, with a replica series of only 4 vehicles, which due to their wheel set load of 30 tons could only be tested on special infrastructures.

Realisation
PROSE had clarified in advance whether a comparable certification due to the differences between the locomotives IORE I and IORE II was possible and can be used with consideration to the standards which had changed in the mean time, that the IORE II would fulfill the requirements of the TSI CR NOISE, if it were to be measured after. This clarification led to a positive result and so Bombardier was able to propose to prove compliance with TSI CR NOISE to the authorities, infrastructure operators and their customer LKAB by means of an expertise. For noise measurments according to TSI Noise CR the rail roughness of the measuring section has to be determined. The rail roughness within a railway network is almost unknown and should now be assessed by using a specific measuring train. The results should give a first impression of the roughness contribution and other dependencys.

Realisation
Using the acceleration signals at the axle bearing of a freight wagon bogie and the wheel roughness the rail roughness of 1075 km track has been calculated by indirect method. The operation speed was 80 km/h which does not interference the normal railway traffic and leads to accurate measuring results.

Customer Advantage
The rail roughness parameter is essential for modern railway noise prediction tools e.g. to be used in the swiss calculation tool sonRAIL. By means of indirect method rail roughness can be assessed for long distances efficiently. First dependencies of roughness level to track type have been detected and shall be investigated in the future.

The Montreux – Berner Oberland-Bahn (MOB) commissioned PROSE with the design of gauge-changing bogies. The engineers used the MOB-developed design and functional principles, which enable the change of the bogie’s which enable the change of the bogie’s track gauge while running over a fixed track gauge changeover facility at low speed as a basis for the design of the bogie’s. The change from meter gauge to standard gauge and vice versa is facilitated by two half frames that can be slid 435 mm sideways relative to each other and which are featuring independent wheels fitted to them.

Realisation
Stress analysis ans calculations of the running dynamics were performed during the design phase and in order to optimise the components and the bogies, various alternatives were analysed. The development of the bogies was realised in close collaboration with MOB. MOB was in charge of the design for the track gauge changeover facility; PROSE scope of work included the definition of the design requirements which were based on calculations and computers simulations.

The innovative gauge-changing bogies will enable a ride on the GoldenPass line between Montreux and Interlaken without need to change trains due to the varying gauge tracks in the future. This improvement enhaces the attractiveness of the travel and has a positive impact on the tourism of the Berner Oberland and the Vaud Riviera.

The homologation of RENFE Mercancias’ S53 locomotive (TRAXX F140DC) has to be achieved for the Spanish broad gauge network. PROSE Ltd. is assigned to conduct the type tests for running dynamics and noise. Furthermore, the bogie load assumptions, used as the basis for the bogie design, have to be verified.

Realisation
As an accredited and certified test laboratory, PROSE Ltd. prepares all specifications, executes the type tests and evaluates the results in a report, which can be submitted directly to the authorities.

The metro de Medellín is the first modern mass transportation system in Colombia. It started revenue service in 1995. After 12 years of service cracks were found in the aluminium car body bolster beam. These cracks, which are present especially on the motor coaches, have been repaired by the Metro maintenance personnel. The goal is to guarantee the life of the carbody structure for the remaining life of the vehicles until 2025.

Ralisation
Because of its know-how, PROSE was able to do a preliminary FE-Analysis to detect the main reason fot he cracks and presented to the client various cencepts to improve the situation. In a second step, PROSE made an accurate analysis which showed the possibility to make further design improvements. In addition to a steel bracket which can be easily mounted, there were various improvements to achieve the required remaining life of 17 years.

PROSE was able to elaborate rapidly a cost-efficient repair solution which can be implemented by the maintenance organisation of the Metro of Medellín.

The load assumptions on the bogie frame had to be verified for the end customer using measurements during the test drives. In this process, it was particularly important to guarantee that during the test drives, forces that corresponded with the typical intended operating loads, were applied. As the consideration of each individual typical load condition would quickly lead to a week-long trial programme, an optimisation (reduction) of the trial programme was requested at the start.

Realisation
In coordination with the customer, PROSE developed a test concept in which the different typical loading conditions were considered. As an optimal variation, a second locomotive capable of simulating different attachment loads with its braking power, was used. On this basis, PROSE created a detailed test programme in which the tractive and braking forces for each locomotive were defined for every test.

A test concept was defined that provided all of the necessary information for the lowest possible number of test days which were necessary for the customer. This is particularly significant for the otherwise quick and extensive load collective measurements. Through the development of an adapted test concept, the expenditure and duration of test runs were significantly reduced. For example, through the use of a second locomotive as a braking locomotive, it was no longer necessary to use different freight trains with different laden weight. In this way, very high operational expenditure was avoided.

Siemens Transportation requires an EC Type Examination Certificate (module SB) for the diesel electric EuroRunner ER20 locomotive in order to proof that the noise values fulfill the TSI CR Noise requirements. PROSE is assigned by SCONRAIL, a future Notified Body, to perform all necessary measurements.

After the operational issues have been clarified by PROSE, the locomotive is transferred to Switzerland to perform the tests. PROSE is in charge of the entire operational services, including the driver-guide service, the test management and the execution of the measurements, i.e. the dynamic noise measurements at pass-by, with maximum acceleration and at constant speed inside the driver’s cab. Besides, the locomotive’s noise emissions are assessed for various service conditions during standstill.

After the remodeling of the engine mountings our customer wants to compare the behaviors before and after the remodeling. PROSE is assigned to run the according tests.

In order to establish a quantitative comparison of the transmission behavior of the vibrations during standstill and operation, PROSE fits supersensitive accelerometers to the engine mountings of two Am 6/6. The subsequent analysis of the measuring data enables to estimate the strain on the connections between the engine and the surrounding parts.

Due to the test results the customer gains precise information regarding the strain that is induced by the vibration of the engine and can use this knowledge as a basis to decide on remodeling the engine mounting of all its Am 6/6.

Iarnród Éireann - Irish Rail  commissioned PROSE with the anti-skid checks in accordance with UIC 541-05.

Realisation
The anti-skid measurements were carried out on a 3 part DMU Class 22000 in Ireland on the line between Limerick and Tipperary with a maximum speed of 160 km/h.

Due to the growing demands of the passengers, the law (disability law, etc.) and the increasing operational requirements, SBB has decided to completely refit their NPZ control and rail car. Supplemented by newly acquired low-floor vehicles they form the new Domino unit. As the refit results in a change of the weight distribution, PROSE is commissioned to assess the bogies regarding their stability, running and braking behavior and to adjust them accordingly. PROSE is also in charge of ensuring the mechanical integration of the new systems (train and vehicle bus system and modernized driver’s-cab control panel), compliance with the fire protection requirements according to DIN 5510 and conception and management of the readmission after the refit.

The entire vehicle engineering is carried out by the underwriting group EHP (ENOTRAC, Helbling Technik and PROSE). The refit of the vehicles takes place at the SBB workshops in Olten and Yverdon. In a first stage, several concepts are developed in order to define – in cooperation with the customer – the best solution for each case. Based on these decisions, the necessary documentations for supply and production and assembly drawings are prepared and the engineering is executed. During the refitting PROSE engineers support the workshops in situ.

The measurements are performed in compliance with TSI CR Noise and the according measuring reports are examined by PROSE’s subsidiary company SCONRAIL. If all the required TSI-standards are met, an EC Type Examination Certificate (module SB) is issued.

To realize the validation the measuring technology to monitor pressure, axle speed and control signal is mounted. Furthermore, a track irrigation plant is fitted to the train set.

The locomotives Sr2 operate under the typical and harsh Finnish winter conditions that are equally challenging for the locomotives and the tracks and call for an extensive analysis of running dynamic behavior. Therefore, the actual service performance of two locomotives is to be recorded for several months. Each locomotive is fitted with a measuring system that records the accelerations of the vehicle during each run. It is crucial that the system is unmanned, i.e. the recording is automatically and maintenance-free, especially under harsh winter conditions.

Realisation
PROSE Ltd. develops a reliable working measuring system and fits it to the vehicles. The system records the accelerations as well as further information, e.g. the position of the vehicle by means of a GPS. The operation of the system is controlled via a GSM-modem. Finally, the substantial data amount is evaluated and the large amount of information summarized by means of a short presentation.

PROSE Ltd. is in charge of the entire measuring campaign – from fitting the system to the vehicles to the interpretation of the data. In the end the customer can rely on a substantial amount of data on the running behavior of the locomotives. Measurements were carried out on a FLIRT RABe 526 in October 2008 on behalf of Südostbahn (SOB).
The objective of the test drives was, on the one hand, to reveal the possible shortcomings at a regular operation of 160 km/h with selective measurements and, on the other hand, in the interest of Stadler, to show whether a FLIRT in its present form is also able to be put into operation at 200 km/h and where the boundaries lie.

Realisation
Threshold values for key components were discussed by the manufacturer and the final customer for the assessment of the FLIRT's operational capability at high speeds. Through selective measurements such as of, for example, pressure fluctuations in the interior of the vehicle, temperature in the gearbox mountings, motor accelerations, drive oscillations, shock absorber forces and structural oscillations the critical parameters were covered.

SIEMENS TS in Munich received the order from Queensland Railways (QR) to deliver 20 type Bo‘Bo‘Bo‘ electro locomotives, which should be an update of the existing QR 3700 to the state of the art. The SIEMENS Center of Competence for bogies in Graz (SIEMENS TS BG DE) commissioned PROSE to develop the associated two-axle end and centre bogies.

Realisation
In close collaboration with SIEMENS TS BG DE Graz the development, based on the existing concept, the layout calculation, structural analysis and running dynamic analysis as well as detail design and documentation have been realized by the PROSE team. The manufacturing takes place in Graz. Due to delivery dates and due to small quantities no cast parts were used; bogie frame, balancer and traction transmission are designed as welded constructions.

Thanks to the extensive experience of PROSE’s design team, this design is easy to assemble and low in service and maintenance efforts, resulting in advantageous costs of ownership. In serial production, the customer especially benefits from the unitized frame design for the end and centre bogie. Further, by considering various standard components from SIEMENS, the amount of new developments at subsystems can be avoided considerably.

Customer Requirement
CTC (Collectivité Territoriale de Corse) has ordered by the vehicle manufacturer CFD (Compagnie des Chemins de Fer Départementaux) 12 DMU’s, type AMG 800. Operator is CFC (Chemin de Fer de la Corse), a subsidiary of SNCF. This order was placed together with the modernisation of whole railway infrastructure (rails, buildings, vehicles). PROSE Ltd. was nominated by the manufacturer to perform the approval tests for the DMU.

Realisation
The following functions and characteristics were measured according specification and standards (UIC, EN) and documented:
The brake distances in any kind of operation and loading conditions and the thermal behaviour during cutting of the hydraulic brake system on mountain railway sections.
The power capacity of the traction equipment (2 diesel engines type DEUTZ and transmission type VOITH) in all loading conditions.
The running behaviour and comfort of the DMU on the whole network on Corsica.
Outside noise and noise within the vehicle and vibrations under different running conditions of all traction- and comfort devices (ventilation, air-conditioning).

Customer Advantage
With the accredited testing laboratory, part of PROSE Ltd., the vehicle manufacturer has a competent partner for the approval process on site. For each single testing packet, CFD has a single contact person. The PROSE Engineer organize and coordinate all necessarily test. Because of that, CFD can save time and money.

Customer Requirement
The Netherlands railway company Connexxion ordered by the German Fahrzeugtechnik Dessau five PROTOS-EMU. The operation line of the PROTOS is between Amersfoort and Ede Wageningen in the Netherlands.
The notified body Lloyd’s Register Rail Europe assigned PROSE Ltd. to perform all necessarily tests for the homologation of the EMU.

Realisation
The engineers of the accredited testing laboratory of PROSE equipped the hole train with the necessarily sensors to perform the tests. Therefore the following functions and characteristics were measured according specification and standards (UIC, EN) and documented:
The brake distances in any kind of operation and loading conditions and proper functioning of the wheel slide control.
The running behaviour and comfort of the EMU.
Outside and inside noise as well in the static and in the dynamic state.
The measurement of the EMC was done together with our partner Montena.
All results of the evaluation were documented in reports.

The accredited testing laboratory of PROSE Ltd. performed all type tests integrally. Because of that, our customer has a competent partner for the approval process on site. It was possible to reduce the human-human interface and do handle the homologation tests very flexible and efficiently.

For approval of the S130 Intercity train the relative test reports had to be prepared by an accredited test laboratory. Tha ctivities had to be planned in a way, that Talgo could use its know-how and its resources as good as possible. On the other hand PROSE had to make sure that all tasks were performed in accordance with the pertinent rules.

Realisation
The Talgo test department performed the running dynamic tests and the relative data assessment. PROSE engineers supervised the process fromt the specification to the test report of Talgo.

PROSE assured acceptance of the documents produced by a constant contact on all levels. By witnessing the test runs PROSE was able to verify that the respective qualified personnel had been used by Talgo in the measurement campains. The consistency of the test reports was checked by the relative plausibility calculations.

Patentes Talgo was in a position to take advantage of the PROSE accredited test laboratory in regard to the gain in know-how and the optimisation of the costs.

Customer Requirement
The aim of the developing sonRAIL is to establish a forward-looking noise model, in order to enable the quantification of the noise emission of the railroad that the residents along the lines are subjected to. sonRAIL is meant to extend the regulations of SemiBEL which don’t fulfill the nowadays requirements (noise barriers, high speeds) anymore. To establish the noise model, an emission model is needed that enables to conclude which noise is emitted by which vehicle (passenger train, freight wagon, commuter train) under certain line routing conditions (bend, straight line, switch) and on certain tracks (sleeper and rail types etc.). As a basis for the emission model, extensive noise measurements are executed on the lines Fribourg – Lausanne and Rothrist – Wanzwil (new track line). Additional measurements are performed in order to validate the emission model and to establish the emission of trains at speeds above 160 km/h.

Realisation
PROSE is commissioned by the Federal Office for the Environment (FOEN) to perform the noise emission measurements, thereby being in charge of the measurements as well as of the operation of the railway system. To perform the noise emission measurements on the line Rothrist – Wanzwil three test points on two sites are operated. For the measurements between Fribourg and Lausanne 12 test points on 10 sites are operated. The measurements are performed in parallel and within a measurement setup that complies with EN 3095. In addition to the noise measurements, the track roughness and vertical track acceleration are quantified in order to establish the wheel roughness indirectly. Furthermore, to ensure a better modeling due to more exact information on the wheel roughness, PROSE decides to operate two measurement trains – in addition to the usual trains – and to establish their wheel roughness too. This allows for a detailed modeling of the stimulus. PROSE has many years of wide experience in organizing and performing noise measurements on railway vehicles as well as organizing the operating. Furthermore, PROSE has conducted many type test measurements as well as troubleshooting measurements and noise remediations.

To organize noise emission measurements is a great challenge that requires: two measurement trains, running up to 12 measuring sites in parallel, organizing appropriate safeguards at the test points, coordinating 12 measuring teams from several companies in order to enable the comparison of the results during evaluation evaluating and administrating approx. 30 GB performance data of more than 3000 pass-byes. Due to PROSE’s wide experience with measurements in the railroad field, its experience in handling great amounts of data as well as in organizing operational services in cooperation with the participating railways, PROSE is the ideal partner for the Federal Office for the Environment to organize and implement the noise emission measurements.

Customer Requirement
For the homologation of railbound cranes the safety against derailment can be proved by calculation or by measurements.
The method by calculation has the advantage of being cost effective, but would lead to a far too restrictive homologation. Running with load on the side of the crane would not be admissive anymore.

Realisation
PROSE performed measurements according to EN 14363 to prove the safety against derailment.
During the measurements a crane load was simulated. Before the measurement the whole process was discussed with the authorities and the measuremen was specified. This specification together with the report of the measurements was the base for the homologation of the crane in Switzerland.

Customer Advantage
By adopting the measurement defined in EN 14363 for the case of a lateral loading, it was possible to prove the sufficient safety against derailment of the crane.
The crane was only needed for two days for the measurement.

Customer Requirement
Because of vibrations on the bushings of the transformers of the water-based power plant „Sultana del Este“ those bushings were damaged. Siwss Re wanted to support ist customer in solving this problem. PROSE was commissioned to investigate the vibration and top elaborate solutions.

Realisation
With a team of ABB Consultants, Schwab Schwingungstechnik and PROSE, the vibrations were analysed. Beginning with the diesel motors, which are the main source of the vibrations, and ending with a detailed modal analysis of the transformer, the complete mechanism of vibrations propagation was analysed within two day. Based on the results gained by this analysis, it could be shown, that an improved suspension of the transformer on the barch would not improve the situation. A pragmatic solution consisting of local reinforcement and decoupled arrangement could be elaborated based on the modal analysis.

Customer Advantage
By following a very pragmatic and interdisciplinary approach and by the close co-operation of a transformer expert, a suspension expert and PROSE as measuring institute and vibration specialists the damaging vibration and ist sources could be analysed within a very short time frame and a safe and cost-efficient solution could be elaborated. The improvement of the suspension of the transformer could be clearly declared being the wrong way.

Customer Requirement
The company JOSEF MEYER Ltd. (JMR) located at Rheinfelden developed a new container flat waggon for three 20-foot containers. Earlier braking distance measurement, also performed by PROSE, exposed that the cars of the type Sgnss CTW 2004 were over-braked. For this reason JMR adjusted the brake system of that car type. The breaking behavior of the waggon after the changes should be evaluated.

Realisation
In October 2006, braking distance measurements with the converted coach were performed at the Bern area. For these tests, the carrying coach of JMR was uncoupled from the PROSE measuring coach. After that, the carrying waggon caused a fast break. The operation was performed by the partner of PROSE, the BLS.

Customer Advantage
The measurement equipment made it possible that after each measurement run the measuring data was available in the measuring coach immediately. On that way, it was possible to calculate the breaking percents after each run. The results could be discussed with the customer.

Customer Requirement
The proof, that the new articulated railcars for Arriva fulfil the limits given by TSI CR Noise and the UIC codes 644 and 651 had to be provided. The goal of the measurements was the approval in Germany and in the Netherlands.

Realisation
The measurements on the articulated railcar were realised in close cooperation with the manufacturer of the vehicle. The focus was put on a lean and efficient testing of the vehicle.

Customer Advantage
By focusing on the requirements to be proven for homologation it became possible to perform all necessary noise measurement within a very short time. The very efficient train operation in Switzerland made short testing times possible. The complete TSI Noise measurements (standstill, acceleration, internal and external pass-by noise) and the additional measurements according to UIC 644 and 651 were performed within two days. Also the report could be issued because of the high degree of standardisation shortly after the end of the test, making an on-tim homologation possible.

Customer Requirement
Rotem intends to strengthen the aluminium bodyshell of the KTX-2 high speed train and concurrently to implement a value engineered design.

Realisation
Parts of the bodyshell have been analysed with the Finite Element Method and optimised designs for sub-assemblies have been proposed to the customer.

By means of the Finite Element Method an optimum design can be achieved for the bodyshell.

Customer Requirement
TSI CR Noise prescribe several noise measurements in standstill, acceleration as well as continuous running at different conditions of load, velocity and measurement location. Moreover the TSI regulation requires that the track is within certain limited conditions. Even nowadays general access to the rail network it is getting troublesome to find an appropriate location and get time slots to perform measurement runs.

Realisation
PROSE could provide a quality assessed location for pass by noise measurements. The direct link to a locale railway operator enables PROSE to perform quick and compact measurements programs. All necessary actions like temporarily operating approval, track access permits and the organisation of all train runs either measurement or transfer had been done by PROSE.

Customer Requirement
The light and low-noise (LEILA) bogie is born out of a research project and shall now prove its road capability in field tests. In order to get the approval for field tests on the swiss standard gauge railway network from the authorities, some verifications have to be done. In parallel to performing these verifications, the implementation of the cutting-edge properties on the new bogie type is verified.

Realisation
PROSE as general contractor organizes the measuring runs and performs the tests together with the other partner in the LEILA-consortium. We support our customer – Josef Meyer Waggon AG in Rheinfelden, Switzerland – in the obtainment of the temporary operating approval from the Swiss Federal Office for Transporation (BAV). The measuring runs are operated by Bahn-Support GmbH as train operator on behalf of PROSE.The test train comprises two container carrying wagons – one of them with Y25-bogies, the other one with LEILA-bogies – in order to be able to compare the performance of both bogies directly. The PROSE measuring coach was placed between both freight wagons and was used as workplace for the measuring engineers and as power source for the test train.The measurements were mainly done by the institute for rail vehicle of the technical university of Berlin (TU-Berlin). PROSE contributed with its own measuring equipment in the field of brake control and noise measurements according to TSI CR noise. The continuous monitoring of the running stability as well as of the correct operation of the brake was also done by PROSE.

Customer Advantage
The tests are currently done under the active management by PROSE together with all project partners. The goal is the obtainment of the temporary operating approval on a short notice. Changes in the planning in respect to the initial planning can be handled very efficiently as PROSE is the central contact person for all project partners, making communication efficient and decisions fast. Additionally PROSE can support the measurement teams with its own measuring equipment in case it is needed.

Customer Requirement
No standardised method for testing the noise relevant improvement after refurbishing steel bridges is known today; i.e. no quantitative value can be specified. Therefore the FOEN commissioned PROSE with the elaboration of a concept for a noise assessment for railway bridges built from steel.

Realisation
A global approach had to be taken in order to determine the characteristics of the noise emission of the railway and to combine it with the subjective impression of the affected persons.

PROSE disposes of a considerable experience in the assessmemtn of noise measurement as an accredited test laboratory in the railway field. Procedures to assess the success of the bridge refurbishment could be defined which take the relevant norms into account but which also consider the difficult local situations. Further on the problem of the time laps between the tests before and after the refurbishment have been taken into account.

Customer Advantage
The FOEN now disposes of a clear procedure how to define and assess the success of the refurbishment of steel railway bridges. The definition of the boundary conditions are reducing the uncertainities and improve the safety in the planning phase.

Customer Requirement
The technical specification for interoperability concerning the noise of rolling stock of conventional rail systems (TSI CR NOISE) requires a confirmation for all new and modernised rail vehicles. This Test has to prove that the noise generated by the vehicles is within the given limit values.

Realisation
In order to reduce the rising costs effectively, PROSE decided to perform a bundled noise measurement according to TSI CR NOISE for freight wagons. Thus several wagons types of different manufacturers were marshalled together to a measuring train. PROSE performed the measurement on the line located in the west of Bern between Kerzers and Müntschemier together with the operator BLS. This line was specially modified to perform noise measurements. The operation on this single track line is much more efficient as on other TSI-lines in Europe.

Customer Advantage
The execution of such noise measurements is attractive, because the pooling of measurements of the different wagon types lowered the costs for each individual wagon type considerably. Furthermore it is attractive for the manufacturers because all they have to do is to provide the vehicles. All other services were provided by PROSE. PROSE accomplished the measurements, assigned BLS for the execution of the train operation and organized the creation of an EU examination certificate together with a Notified Body.

Customer Requirement
On the steam locomotives of the Schafberg railway, several cracks occurred in the frame. Because of that, the successor company of the manufacturer of the locomotives, the DLM Ltd, wanted to know if exceptional load cases come up during normal operation.

Realisation
The 1st of June 2006, measurement runs with the locomotive number Z 12 of the Schafberg railway were performed on the line between St.Wolfgang and Schafberg-Alpe in Austria. In close cooperation with the customer, the sensors for measuring the mechanical stresses and forces were placed at the frame of the locomotive. With the instrumented locomotive, all relevant load cases were measured, as accelerating in a steep gradient and emergency stop while driving downhill.

Customer Advantage
The customer was able to compare the results of the measurement directly on site with the theoretical analysis. The results of measurement could also be compared with similar measurements on other locomotives.

Customer Requirement
As a part of the commissioning and approval process of the new replica Bernina Express panorama coaches (replica of the car body, but with redesigned bogies), the comfort and the lateral running behaviour should be assessed. Finally the compliance with the limits concerning the noise emissions had to be proved.

Realisation
Test runs have been performed in order to survey the above mentioned issues. PROSE Ltd. conducted the test runs, provided and installed the measurement equipment, evaluated the measuring data and assessed the results. The comfort and the lateral running behaviour were examined by means of acceleration sensors in the coaches and by means of deflection sensors between the bogie and the coach. The so called Wz-value was calculated as result of the comfort evaluation. The lateral accelerations and deflections were analysed when passing several switches.The noise measurements were made according to the standard EN 3381 inside the coach and according to EN 3095 during pass-by. A report was delivered to the customer presenting the assessment of all results. All test runs have been conducted within a short time and using only one test train.

Customer Advantage
In order to limit the extent and the costs, all investigations were conducted at the same test train, even though various issues were concerned. Furthermore the different issues were assessed during the same test runs. As a consequence even the operator had to provide the coaches only once and only for a short time.

Customer Requirement
As Bombardier Transportations TRAXX locomotives shall start operations on the new high speed line HSL Zuid in the Netherlands and Belgium, the running characteristics had to be proved according to EN 14363. The locomotives shall be operated on tracks with an inclination of 1:20 at a speed of 160 km/h.

Realisation
The manufacturer Bombardier Transportation assigned PROSE Ltd. as accredited and certified laboratory to execute the running dynamic type test. The tests were conducted as partial on-track test and according to the simplified measuring method in EN 14363. PROSE Ltd. prepared the specification and conducted the test runs in the Netherlands. Finally the results were evaluated in a report, which could be submitted directly to the authorities.

Customer Requirement
The manufacturer of the high-speed trains AVE S103 (Velaro E), SIEMENS, was looking for a for a competent partner for a research project in the field of acoustic measurments. The project took place in the context of the homologation period.

Realisation
The combination of the knowledge of SIEMENS from the homologation period with the ICE 3 and the experience of PROSE in air- and structure-borne sound-field provided the optimum measuring strategy.

Because an engineer of PROSE was on site, the results of the measurements could be evaluated with the customer after each measurement run. Because of that, it was possible to optimise the measurement instrumentation quickly, as it is often necessary in research projects.
